Description
Appearance: They are small, brightly colored birds easily identified by their vivid blue upperparts, orange-brown underparts, and long, pointed beaks.
Hunting Behavior: As seen in your photograph, they are exceptional hunters. They typically perch on branches overlooking water, waiting to plunge into the water to catch small fish or insects like the dragonfly held in its beak.
Habitat: They are commonly found near slow-moving or still water, such as rivers, lakes, canals, and ponds, where they can easily spot their prey.
In Sri Lanka: In the local Sinhala language, this bird is known as the "Mal Pithaliya" (මල් පිලිහුඩුවා).
