Description
Appearance: They are medium-sized, bright green parrots. While adult males typically develop a distinctive pink and black ring around their necks (from which they get their name), females and juveniles lack this, as seen in your photograph.
Adaptability: These parakeets are incredibly adaptable and are found in a wide variety of habitats, including tropical forests, woodlands, agricultural fields, parks, and urban gardens across Sri Lanka.
Social Behavior: They are highly social, gregarious birds often seen in pairs or small flocks. They are also known to be quite noisy, frequently announcing their presence with loud, screeching calls as they fly or forage.
Diet: They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on a diverse diet of fruits, vegetables, seeds, buds, nuts, and flowers. They are often spotted feeding on various types of seed pods, just as the one in your picture appears to be doing.
Intelligence: Like many parrots, they are intelligent and can be quite mischievous. They are a very common and familiar sight throughout the island.
