Description
Appearance: It is easily recognized by its vibrant orange-brown wings with black borders containing white spots. The wing tips also feature distinctive white markings on a black background.
Defense Strategy: Like other species in the Danainae subfamily, the Plain Tiger is toxic to predators. It sequesters toxins from the milkweed plants it feeds on as a caterpillar, which makes it taste unpleasant to birds and other potential predators. Its bold color pattern serves as a warning signal (aposematism) of its toxicity.
Mimicry: Due to its unpalatable nature, other harmless butterfly species, most notably the female Danaid Eggfly (Hypolimnas misippus), have evolved to mimic its appearance to gain protection from predators.
Habitat: They are very common and widespread, frequently seen in open habitats, gardens, and along roadsides across much of Africa, Asia, and Australia, including here in Sri Lanka.
