Famous Sound: Cicadas are most famous for the incredibly loud, buzzing, or shrill songs produced by the males. They do this using specialized organs called "tymbals" located on their abdomens, which vibrate to create their characteristic sound.
Life Cycle: They have one of the most remarkable life cycles in the insect world. Most of their lives are spent underground as nymphs, feeding on the juices of tree roots, before they emerge as adults to mate and lay eggs.
Appearance: They are generally stout-bodied insects with large, clear, and intricately veined wings held roof-like over their backs. They have large, prominent eyes set wide apart on their heads.
Diet: As both nymphs and adults, they feed on plant sap using their specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts.
Camouflage: They are masters of camouflage, and their mottled brown, green, and black coloration allows them to blend in perfectly with tree bark, as seen in your photo
