Description
Distinctive Appearance: They are easily recognized by their brilliant red facial wattles (fleshy skin flaps) in front of their eyes, their black head and breast that contrasts with white patches on their cheeks, and their long, bright yellow legs.
Behavior and "Alarm": They are very well-known for being highly vigilant. When disturbed, they produce a loud, piercing, and repetitive call often described as "did-he-do-it" or "pity-to-do-it," which alerts other birds and animals to potential danger.
Habitat: They are commonly found in open habitats, such as wetlands, agricultural fields, meadows, and even near human-altered landscapes across much of Asia, including Sri Lanka.
Nesting: They are ground-nesters, typically laying their eggs in a shallow depression in the ground, often among pebbles or in open fields, which makes their eggs and chicks very well-camouflaged.
Diet: They are insectivores and feed primarily on a variety of insects, worms, and small invertebrates that they forage for on the ground.
